Newly-crowned World 400m Champion Christine Ohuruogu sounded the horn which set more than 55,000 people on their way. As usual many celebrities got involved, from Emmerdale’s Tony Audenshaw and Radio 2 DJ Jo Wiley to football pundit Robbie Savage, Spice Girl Mel C and Atomic Kitten’s Natasha Hamilton!

In wet and windy conditions, Ethiopia’s 5,000m and 10,000m world record holder Kenenisa Bekele held off Mo Farah and 40-year-old Ethiopian distance legend Haile Gebrselassie to win the men’s race in 60:09.

Kenya’s Priscah Jeptoo was impressive in winning the women’s race ahead of the great Ethiopian duo of Meseret Defar and Tirunesh Dibaba, in 65:44 – just four seconds shy of Paula Radcliffe’s course record.

Britain’s David Weir and Shelly Woods won their fourth and fifth Bupa Great North Run titles in the men’s and women’s wheelchair races respectively.

Many Run England groups including the Walney Wind Cheetahs from Cumbria and the SeafRUNt Smilers from Sunderland got involved too!
