Since the London 2012 Paralympic Games there has been a surge in the number of people interested in guide running.

England Athletics and British Blind Sport have therefore teamed up to help identify more guide runners to support visually impaired people interested in jogging or running.

Anyone interested in becoming a guide runner can now attend the specifically developed 2 hour workshop “England Athletics Sight Loss Awareness and Guide Running” and their details will then be added onto the Find A Guide database so that they can be matched with a visually impaired runner.

For visually impaired runners looking for a guide runner, coach, club or running group, please contact: Liz Purbrick (National Disability Manager, Community Participation) on lpurbrick@englandathletics.org or 07850514936.

England Athletics have also produced some guidance on guide running to help new guides get started. Click here to download the England Athletics guidance on guide running.

England Athletics and British Blind Sport are also developing an informal guide running workshop with practical experience of guiding aimed at Run England groups and road running clubs. The workshop will be between two to three hours long and will include:

  • Information on types of visual impairment and common sight loss conditions
  • Competition, including classification and rules
  • Terminology and behaviour
  • Making sessions VI friendly
  • Guide running, including top tips, safety and practical session

To express an interest in organising this workshop for your network, club or running group please contact: Liz Purbrick (National Disability Manager, Community Participation) on lpurbrick@englandathletics.org or 07850514936.
