Well done to four members of Karen & Laura’s beginners’ running group in Bromley who recently completed their first 5km parkrun in the local Norman Park.

Karen and Laura became group leaders after completing the Leadership in Running Fitness (LiRF) course thanks to support from the Mayor’s Skills Legacy Fund.

They started their first beginners’ running group on 3rd August with the target of their members being able to run 5km within the first 10 weeks. Eight members have now completed the distance, with one more member due to run in two weeks time.

During the training, Laura had to miss a few sessions, but we’ll let her off as the break was to give birth to her first child, Benjamin, on 5th September. Karen says she has found leading the group to be a challenge but she learnt a lot during the course.

The group meets once a week with members doing a further two runs to get even fitter for their next run. All training sessions have been planned to give gradual progression which has resulted in a low injury rate and continued faith in Karen and Laura’s programmes.

Plans are for the group to stay together for the time being, but to become an improvers’ running group, regularly attending the parkrun. Good luck to all and please let us know how you get on!
