As easy as 3-2-1! Set up marked running routes in your area
06 March 2013
Local authorities, university or colleges, conservation organisations and other landowners who want to encourage more people to get active can set up marked running routes as part of Run England’s 3-2-1 project.
3-2-1 is Run England’s project which aims to provide a range of marked out running or jogging routes across the country that anyone can have a go at. It's a way of providing a meaningful challenge to help more people to get running when it best suits them.
By working in partnership with affiliated athletics clubs and Run England groups across the country, route providers can mark routes that are 3, 2 and 1 miles, kilometres or laps – suitable target distances for anyone who wishes to have a go! Due to popular demand, there are now 4km and 5km markers on sale too!
To get 3-2-1 routes set up, providers just need to decide which markers you need and order them using the order form on the 3-2-1 Route Markers page. Run England will then send you your markers in the post.
When the markers arrive, routes need to be set up carefully and once the appropriate forms have been completed (which Run England will supply when processing marker orders) detailing the routes’ and their distances, terrain, amenities, surface/terrain, profile and more, they will appear on our 3-2-1 Route Finder map.
The layout and usage of the marked 3-2-1 running routes is the responsibility the local providers. The usual health and safety checks should be followed in laying out open, even-surfaced, easy-to-follow, safe, accurate and well-lit routes at all times - with the permission of whoever owns the land.
If you're a member of a running group or athletics club, or just a runner who could make use of 3-2-1 running routes, be sure to make landowners aware of this opportunity and there could soon be a route near you.
