Be part of the Legacy and become a Sport Maker
31 October 2011
Now officially launched, Sport Makers provides the chance to be part of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic legacy.
The Sport England programme is totally flexible and extremely rewarding. Sport Makers can choose how they want to be involved and who they want to make sport happen for – friends, colleagues, neighbours or their local community.
The scheme aims to recruit 40,000 new Sport Makers into sport and help provide participation opportunities in the local community. A Sport Maker is someone who is 16 years and above and makes sport happen for others. It’s not formal or restricted, they are just someone who informally helps others to participate.
Whether it’s planning the route, getting your friends to come along or promoting in your workplace – running doesn’t just happen, it needs people to make it happen! Run England and England Athletics are offering Sport Makers the chance to get involved and more importantly, get others involved in Run England. There are many ways Sport Makers can ‘make running happen’ from promoting a local group to reminding their friends of the time to even starting their own group.
Whether you have never run before, already enjoy running or not run in a while – Run England is for you! Run England groups create a fun, social environment for you and your friends to enjoy running with similar ability people and be provided with support from a leader who is trained to help people like you.
Details of the first Sport Maker workshops have been unveiled, where people are invited to attend a free inspirational workshop where they will explore:
- How Sport Makers fits in with the Olympic and Paralympic values that inspired it
- How you can make the biggest difference to sport, as a Sport Maker
- The benefits of being involved and other training opportunities
- How you can get involved and make sport happen locally
