England Athletics 5k Road Championships
25 November 2016
England Athletics are pleased to announce that in 2017 they will be adding the increasingly popular 5k distance to the England Road Championship series.
The inaugural England 5k Championships will take place on 28th April. The event takes place on a Friday evening around Kingsley, Cheshire in the heart of the Cheshire countryside with a 7.15pm start time.
The Championship race will be incorporated within the Mid-Cheshire 5k Series, which has in the last couple of years proven popular - with elite runners and club runners having produced some quick times and many personal bests.
Event Organisor Michael Harrington said, "We are delighted to be incorporating the English 5k championships into our race. In a short space of time this race has attracted a great following in the North West. We're looking forward to showcasing the course to the rest of the country after having received great support from the thriving local club scene in Cheshire, Merseyside and Greater Manchester."
On the unusual step of holding a Championship on a Friday Evening, England Athletics' Road Running Coordinator Charlotte Fisher said, “We are really pleased to be working in partnership with Michael and his team. As people across the sport know there is an exceptionally congested competition calendar into which to try to find room for another championships. Friday night events on the roads have already proven very successful elsewhere in the country, and the sport has a history of Friday night action including the 10,000m often being held on the Friday of national championships. We are looking forward to seeing how this works as an approach to introducing an event without adding to the already crowded weekends."
