The Hawkinge Hurricanes, a road runing club and Run Together Group in Kent have recently been awarded Clubmark status.

They have only been established 13 months and already boast eighty-four members ranging from novice to ellite, one coach, 5 qualified run leaders, a welfare officer and a mental Health ambassador.

Coach in Running Fitness (CiRF) Sam Miller told us, "Our motto is fun, fit and friendly and its definitely that!  We offer a fun, relaxed and inclusive club for adults only and we presently support two registered disabled athletes in our ranks.  The Clubmark process has helped our club structure and procedures to ensure the welfare of all our member's.  It encourages everyone to enjoy sport and stay involved.  If our little team can do it, so can others!"

The Hawkinge Hurricanes are affiliated to England Athletics and to the Kent Athletics Association   they also have good community links supporting other local business such as Shepway Sports Trust, embroidery service, web design, physiotherapy, sports massage, gait analysis, and podiatry

Sam and the five UKA Leaders in Running Fitness (Sarah Harris, Dave Burton, Marie Brazier, Karen Brown and Elizabeth Morgan) together manage the regular club and Run Together Group sessions which include:

  • Twice weekly training session based from Hawkinge Community centre
  • Once monthly Bootcamp with Functional Fitness
  • Once monthly Sunday trail runs
  • quarterly track sessions in Ashford
  • Annual club 10k and 5km race

This diverse mix of sessions is certainly paying off; 6 athletes will be running Brighton Marathon 2017 in a couple of weeks' time (two are placed in the Elite Start), and 4 are entered in the London 2017 marathon, one of which is the Major of Folkestone Mr Martin Salmon.  And looking ahead, a team of 5 - including Sam Miller - are heading off in June to compete Race to the Kings - a 53 mile ultrarace!

To keep the momentum going, there will be a FUNdamental course due to start Tuesday 18th April.  This is a 10 week beginners' programme building to a 5k Fun Run in week 10.
