Running and AthleFIT changing the lives of people in deprived areas of Leicester

Running and AthleFIT has changed the lives of people in deprived areas of Leicester and Leicestershire. Its a project that the Leicestershire Athletics and Running Network have been involved in for two and a half years from inception and has been delivered really successfully by Nicki Nealon.

Recently, two celebration events took place, one in Greenhill and one in New Parks.  These evenings provided an opportunity to recognise the achievements of participants on the programme and also to provide a group activity for everyone to take part in.

Whilst there were numerous achievements to be recognised one of the highlights was to be able to offer two participants the opportunity to take part in the Leicester Half Marathon.  These are inactive participants who came onto the programme and have taken part in the mentoring sessions and then exited into the Beginners' Running and AthleFIT programme.  They have continued to improve with their running and showed an interest in training for the half marathon when encouraged by the Run Activator; however, they were concerned in being able to pay the entry fee so as a reward for their dedication to the programme their entry fee to the half marathon has been funded.
